Emergo by UL and the Shanghai Center for Medical Testing and Inspection (CMTC) have entered into an agreement to collaborate on human factors research and product development projects.

Emergo by UL’s Human Factors Research & Design team will contribute deep expertise in the application of human factors to medical technology, including conducting user research and usability tests. CMTC will also contribute human factors expertise to the relationship, with a special focus on the needs of the Greater China market for medical technology. CMTC, which represents the Chinese government’s medical product quality interests, has begun building an extensive usability research facility in Shanghai, which is expected to become a national hub for usability research.

Emergo by UL and CMTC will co-market services as well as collaborate on projects. It is expected that CMTC will take the organizational lead on projects conducted for Chinese customers who are developing products chiefly for use in Greater China. With CMTC in the lead on such projects, the work products (e.g., usability test reports) will be appropriate for submission to the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA).

Emergo by UL will support CMTC’s in-country work  by providing consulting on usability test protocols and other services. Emergo by UL will also take the lead on serving Chinese customers who need to conduct research outside of Greater China, such as to develop and bring products to market in the US and EU.

The collaborative team’s research facility in Shanghai will include the following features:

  • Operating room simulator / laboratory
  • Critical care simulator / laboratory
  • General purpose usability test laboratory
  • Dedicated observation room to complement each laboratory
  • Interview and training rooms
